Can a wider highway save livelihoods?
Jim Robbins wrote an article that appeared in the New York Times on December 17, 2006, reporting on efforts to widen US Highway 2 in northern Montana (see above link to PDF file of his article, "Hoping a Wider Highway Can Save Their Livelihoods") Frank Popper, a professor of geography at Rutgers University, has studied the depopulating Great Plains and says that trying to widen this highway " . . . smacks of desperation. . ." Dr. Popper thinks we should restore the native prairie instead of making major investments in roads where there is no demand. He may have the right idea.
